Barabati Fort

Cuttack

Barabati Fort is the ruined seat of the medieval Gajapati kings of Odisha, built around the 14th century on the banks of the Mahanadi river in Cuttack. Little remains beyond the entrance gateway, a nine-storey watchtower foundation, and the surrounding moat, but the site is central to understanding Cuttack's history as Odisha's former capital.

The grounds today double as a public park and the adjoining Barabati Stadium hosts cricket matches, giving the fort a dual identity as both a heritage site and a local recreational space.

History and context

The fort was the capital of the Gajapati dynasty before power shifted, and later saw Mughal and Maratha control before eventual British annexation; much of the original structure was destroyed by a Maratha attack and subsequent neglect.
