Fishing boats on the calm brackish water of Chilika Lake

Coastal Odisha

Chilika Lake

Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, spread over roughly 1,100 sq km, known for Irrawaddy dolphins and vast winter bird congregations.

Chilika sits between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, its salinity and shoreline shifting with the seasons through a narrow outlet to the sea. It supports one of the world's few regularly sighted Irrawaddy dolphin populations near Satapada, and in winter hosts one of the Indian subcontinent's largest gatherings of migratory waterbirds at Nalabana.

It is not a single site but a scattered lake system — Satapada for dolphins, Mangalajodi for birds, Barkul and Rambha for lakeside stays and Kalijai for the island shrine. Choosing the right access point matters more here than at most Odisha destinations.
