Chilika Lake

Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts

Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, spanning roughly 1,100 sq km across three districts and connected to the Bay of Bengal by a narrow sea mouth. It supports one of the largest wintering grounds for migratory birds in India and a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins.

The lake is not a single visiting point but a large ecosystem with several access points — Satapada, Rambha, Barkul and Mangalajodi each offer a different experience, from dolphin-watching to bird-focused boat trips.

History and context

Chilika was designated the first Ramsar site in Asia in 1981, recognising its wetland importance, and remains critical habitat for the Irrawaddy dolphin, a species found in only a few locations worldwide.

Nalabana Island, a bird sanctuary within the lake, hosts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds between November and February, including flamingos, pelicans and various duck species arriving from as far as Central Asia and Siberia.

Why visit

  • One of the few reliable places in India to see wild Irrawaddy dolphins
  • Major winter migratory bird congregation at Nalabana Island
  • Scale and variety — different access points offer distinct experiences within the same lagoon system

Things to see

  • Nalabana bird sanctuary (winter season)
  • Sea mouth at Satapada where the lagoon meets the Bay of Bengal
  • Kalijai temple island near Barkul

How to reach

  • Satapada gateway: about 50 km from Puri
  • Barkul and Rambla gateways: about 100 km from Bhubaneswar
  • Mangalajodi gateway: about 65 km from Bhubaneswar

Travel tips

  • Use licensed boat operators with life jackets; verify safety equipment before boarding
  • Do not allow boats to chase, encircle or approach dolphins closely — responsible operators maintain distance
  • Carry binoculars for bird-watching sections, particularly at Nalabana and Mangalajodi
