Puri

Jagannath Dham — one of India's four cardinal Hindu pilgrimage seats, anchored by a working fishing-town beach.

Puri is built entirely around the Shree Jagannath Temple, a 12th-century shrine that draws pilgrims year-round and turns into one of the world's largest single-day gatherings during Rath Yatra. The temple town is dense, noisy and devotional in a way few other Odisha destinations are.

Away from the temple, Puri is also a long-standing beach town — not a manicured resort strip, but a working shoreline with fishing boats, sand artists and modest guesthouses. It suits pilgrims first, and families and couples second, provided expectations are set correctly: this is not a quiet beach retreat.

Why visit

  • Darshan at the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple, one of the Char Dham
  • A genuinely lived-in beach town rather than a resort enclave
  • Base for day trips to Konark, Chilika and Raghurajpur
  • The Rath Yatra chariot festival, if travelling in June or July

Things to do

  • Early-morning darshan (non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple)
  • Walk the Swargadwar beach stretch at sunrise
  • Visit Raghurajpur heritage crafts village, 14 km away
  • Drive the Puri–Konark Marine Drive
  • Browse Odisha handloom and appliqué at the local market
