Carved stone wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in golden light

Konark Sun Temple

Konark, Puri district

The Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 13th century under Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, conceived as the stone chariot of the sun god Surya. It is Odisha's single most recognisable monument and the finest surviving example of mature Kalinga temple architecture.

The temple represents Surya's chariot with twelve pairs of carved stone wheels and a team of horses, all rendered at monumental scale. Several wheels double as accurate sundials, a detail worth having explained on site rather than glancing past.

History and context

Built in the mid-13th century, the temple's main sanctuary (deul) collapsed at an unknown later date, likely due to structural and coastal soil issues compounded over centuries; only the audience hall (jagamohana) and platform survive intact.

The surface sculpture programme — deities, dancers, musicians, animals and everyday scenes — covers nearly every surface and is considered the high point of narrative stone carving in eastern India.

Why visit

  • The wheel sundials and their carved medallions, unmatched anywhere else in India
  • Dense narrative sculpture across the entire plinth and walls
  • The single best-preserved statement of 13th-century Kalinga engineering ambition

Things to see

  • Chariot wheels and their sundial markings
  • Surviving Jagamohana structure
  • Nata Mandira, the detached dance hall
  • Archaeological Museum adjoining the site, housing recovered sculptures

How to reach

  • 35 km from Puri along the coastal Marine Drive road, about 45 minutes
  • 65 km from Bhubaneswar, roughly 1.5 hours by road
  • Nearest airport and major railhead is Bhubaneswar

Travel tips

  • Engage a licensed guide at the entrance — the sculpture programme is difficult to read unaided
