Shree Jagannath Temple

Grand Road, Puri

Shree Jagannath Temple is the 12th-century seat of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in Puri, and one of India's four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. It matters both as a living centre of daily worship and as the origin point of the Rath Yatra chariot festival watched around the world.

The temple complex covers over 10 hectares within a fortified boundary, with the 65-metre main deul visible for kilometres along the coast. Visiting Puri without understanding the temple's ritual calendar means missing the reason the town exists in its current form.

History and context

The present structure dates to the reign of Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty in the 12th century, though the site's worship tradition is held to be older. Kalinga-style architecture defines the complex — a curvilinear deul, a pillared jagamohana hall, and subsidiary shrines within four concentric walls.

The temple kitchen is reputed to be among the largest institutional kitchens anywhere, preparing Mahaprasad for tens of thousands of devotees daily using earthen pots stacked over wood fires. The wooden deities are ritually replaced in the Nabakalebara ceremony, which occurs at irregular intervals tied to the lunar calendar.

Why visit

  • A living ritual tradition maintained without interruption for centuries
  • The Mahaprasad kitchen, among the largest community kitchens in the world
  • Rath Yatra, one of the great processions of the Indian subcontinent

Things to see

  • Singhadwara (Lion's Gate) and the Grand Road approach
  • Ananda Bazaar market selling Mahaprasad
  • Aruna Stambha, the sun pillar moved here from Konark
  • Temple architecture viewed from the Raghunandan Library rooftop

How to reach

  • Located in central Puri, walking distance from the beach and main hotel area
  • 60 km from Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport, about 1.5 hours by road
  • Puri railway station is 2 km from the temple with direct trains from Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Delhi

Travel tips

  • Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple; the rooftop of the nearby Raghunandan Library offers an external view
  • Phones, cameras and leather articles are not allowed inside — use the official cloakrooms near the entrance rather than street vendors
  • Footwear must be removed before entering; photography inside the sanctum is strictly prohibited
  • Avoid engaging unofficial guides ('pandas') who approach outside the gates demanding fixed donations
