Sunrise over the waves at Puri Beach

Puri Beach

Puri town, Puri district

Puri Beach is a long stretch of grey-gold sand on the Bay of Bengal, forming the town's other identity alongside the Jagannath Temple. It is one of the most visited beaches in eastern India, less for scenic drama than for its role as a pilgrimage-town beach where sunrise rituals, sand art and simple sea bathing all happen side by side.

The beach runs for several kilometres, with the main tourist stretch near the Swargadwar cremation ground and hotel row being the most developed and crowded, while quieter sections lie further along toward the New Marine Drive.

History and context

Puri's beach and its temple economy have grown together for centuries — the beach town developed as a service hub for pilgrims, and that history still shows in the mix of ashrams, budget lodges and modern hotels along the shorefront.

The International Sand Art Festival, held annually near the beach, has made Puri a recognised centre for sand sculpture, with the Sand Art Institute run by well-known sculptors based here.

Why visit

  • Sunrise over open water, best watched from the quieter stretch away from the main market
  • Sand art displays and a working sand sculpture institute
  • Easy pairing with the Jagannath Temple for a single Puri day

Things to see

  • Main beach stretch near Grand Road end for atmosphere and food stalls
  • Sand Art Institute and its display sculptures
  • Swargadwar area, used for religious rites
  • New Marine Drive stretch toward Konark for a calmer walk

How to reach

  • Located within Puri town, walking distance from most hotels
  • 60 km from Bhubaneswar airport, about 1.5 hours by road
  • Puri railway station is roughly 2–3 km from the main beach stretch

Travel tips

  • Sea currents at Puri can be strong; swim only in areas marked safe and avoid venturing out alone
  • Lifeguards (locally called 'nolias') patrol some stretches — follow their guidance
  • Beach vendors and photographers can be persistent; agree prices before any service
  • Ask permission before photographing local fishermen or their boats
