Short answer
Puri is Odisha's main beach town and the most developed for tourism; Chandipur is known for its tide that pulls the sea back several kilometres twice a day; Gopalpur offers a quieter, older-town beach atmosphere; and all three require caution around swimming zones and cyclone-season timing.
Puri Beach
A long working beach with fishing boats and a busy promenade; swimming is safest within marked, lifeguard-monitored stretches, since currents elsewhere can be unpredictable.
Chandipur Beach
Located near Balasore, Chandipur's distinctive feature is its retreating tide, which can pull the shoreline back by several kilometres, turning the exposed seabed into a walkable stretch of sand at low tide.
Gopalpur Beach
A smaller, quieter beach town in Ganjam district with a colonial-era history as a port; it suits travellers looking for a slower pace than Puri, combined with the nearby Taptapani hot spring.
Other coastal stops
Chandrabhaga and Ramachandi near Konark, and Astaranga and Paradeep further along the coast, offer quieter alternatives for travellers extending beyond the main three.
Safety notes
Cyclone season runs roughly June to October along the Bay of Bengal coast, and swimming should always be limited to marked, lifeguard-patrolled zones regardless of which beach is visited.
