A former poaching village on Chilika's northern marshes, now a community-run birdwatching destination with exceptional winter numbers.
Mangalajodi sits on Chilika's freshwater northern edge, where reed marshes attract huge numbers of migratory waterbirds between November and February. The village's turn from egg-collecting and bird-trapping to conservation-based tourism, led by local boatmen, is part of what makes a visit worthwhile.
Trips here are quieter and more specialised than Satapada — visitors are usually serious birders or photographers, out on the water before sunrise in narrow country boats.
