Central Odisha
Cuttack
Odisha's former capital and silver-filigree city, set on an island between the Mahanadi and Kathjodi rivers.
Cuttack served as Odisha's capital for centuries before Bhubaneswar was built, and it retains a denser, older urban fabric — narrow lanes, the Barabati Fort ruins and workshops producing tarakasi silver filigree found nowhere else in India in the same form.
Most visitors treat it as a half-day addition from Bhubaneswar rather than a base, combining the fort, Barabati Stadium area and a filigree workshop visit with the Chandi Medha and Qadam-i-Rasool shrines.
Why visit
- Barabati Fort ruins on the Mahanadi riverbank
- Centuries-old tarakasi silver filigree workshops
- Denser, older urban heritage than the newer state capital
- Durga Puja celebrations, among Odisha's largest
Things to do
- Walk the Barabati Fort grounds
- Watch silver filigree artisans at work
- Visit Qadam-i-Rasool and Chandi Medha shrines
- Explore the old bazaar lanes near the river
By rail
Cuttack station is a major stop on the Howrah–Chennai line, close to Bhubaneswar.
