Bhitarkanika National Park

Kendrapara district

Bhitarkanika is India's second-largest mangrove ecosystem, a delta wilderness of creeks and tidal channels in Kendrapara district best known for the largest saltwater crocodiles recorded in India, including individuals exceeding 20 feet. It is explored almost entirely by boat.

Beyond crocodiles, the park protects a dense concentration of resident and migratory birdlife and, at nearby Gahirmatha beach, hosts one of the world's largest mass-nesting sites for Olive Ridley sea turtles.

History and context

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and a national park in 1998, Bhitarkanika's mangrove forest supports over 60 mangrove and mangrove-associate species, providing critical breeding habitat for saltwater crocodiles under a long-running conservation and captive-breeding programme managed by the state forest department.

Gahirmatha, within the wider protected area, is recognised as one of the largest Olive Ridley turtle mass-nesting (arribada) sites in the world, typically occurring between January and March.

Why visit

  • The largest recorded saltwater crocodiles in India
  • Gahirmatha's mass Olive Ridley turtle nesting, a globally significant event
  • Dense mangrove birdlife accessible almost entirely by boat safari

Things to see

  • Dangmal crocodile breeding and rehabilitation centre
  • Mangrove creek boat safari routes
  • Bagagahana heronry (seasonal)
  • Gahirmatha turtle nesting beach (access restricted during nesting season)

How to reach

  • About 140 km from Bhubaneswar, roughly 3.5 hours by road to the Khola or Chandbali boat points
  • Onward travel within the park is by boat only

Travel tips

  • A forest department entry permit is required and should be arranged in advance, ideally through a registered operator
  • Stay inside the boat at all times in crocodile-inhabited creeks; do not approach the riverbank
  • Carry mosquito repellent and light long sleeves — the mangrove environment is humid with high insect activity
  • Direct access to Gahirmatha nesting beach is restricted during the nesting season to protect the turtles
