Rajarani Temple

Old Town, Bhubaneswar

Rajarani Temple, built around the 11th century, is unusual among Bhubaneswar's temples for having no presiding deity currently worshipped inside it, which means it functions today purely as an architectural monument rather than an active shrine, set within landscaped grounds maintained by the ASI.

It takes its name from the distinctive reddish-gold sandstone (rajarania) used in construction, and its tower is famous for the cluster of miniature replica spires rising around the central shikhara.

History and context

The temple's sculpture includes the ashtadikpalas (guardian deities of the eight directions) and graceful female figures, considered among the finest decorative carving of the period, distinguishing it stylistically from the more austere religious temples nearby.
