Lingaraj Temple

Old Town, Bhubaneswar

Lingaraj Temple is the largest and most important temple in Bhubaneswar, an 11th-century Shaiva monument dedicated to Harihara, a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu. Its 55-metre deul is the architectural high point of the city's Old Town and the anchor of Bhubaneswar's identity as the 'temple city'.

The complex holds around 150 subsidiary shrines within its walled enclosure, making it less a single building than a temple town in miniature, still in active daily use.

History and context

Built primarily during the reign of the Somavamshi dynasty in the 11th century, with later additions under the Eastern Gangas, the temple represents the mature phase of Kalinga architecture that preceded Konark.

Its Bindusagar tank, adjoining the temple, is considered sacred and features in the temple's ritual calendar, particularly during the annual Ashokastami chariot festival.

Why visit

  • The monumental deul, among the tallest temple towers in Odisha
  • The Bindusagar tank and surrounding cluster of smaller shrines
  • A continuous worship tradition dating back nearly a thousand years

Things to see

  • Main deul and jagamohana hall
  • Bindusagar sacred tank
  • Nearby Mukteshwar and Parasurameswar temples, walkable from the main gate

How to reach

  • In Bhubaneswar's Old Town, about 5 km from the railway station and 8 km from the airport
  • Well served by autos and app-based cabs from anywhere in the city

Travel tips

  • Non-Hindus are not permitted inside; a raised platform near the entrance, made famous when visited by foreign dignitaries in the past, allows an external view
  • Combine with Mukteshwar and Rajarani temples in one walking loop to make the most of the Old Town
  • Avoid the midday heat; mornings are notably more pleasant for walking between temples
