Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the edge of Bhubaneswar, is best known internationally for its melanistic (black) tigers, a rare genetic variant successfully bred here, alongside a large white tiger population and a botanical garden set around Kanjia Lake.
It combines a zoo, a botanical garden and a boating lake in one campus, making it Odisha's most visited family wildlife attraction and a practical half-day option close to the capital.
History and context
The park opened in 1960 and has been recognised for its captive breeding programmes, particularly for melanistic tigers and white tigers, drawing research interest as well as tourist visits.
