Mahanadi river cutting through Satkosia Gorge

wildlife sanctuary

Satkosia Gorge

Angul and Nayagarh districts

Satkosia Gorge is a dramatic stretch where the Mahanadi river cuts through the Eastern Ghats over roughly 22 km, forming a sanctuary that protects both riverine and forest ecosystems. It is one of the few places in Odisha combining a boat-based river experience with tiger and gharial conservation habitat.

The sanctuary was part of an ambitious, though largely stalled, tiger relocation and gharial reintroduction programme, and remains valued today more for its scenic river gorge boating and forest camping than guaranteed big-cat sightings.

History and context

Satkosia was notified as a wildlife sanctuary and later brought under Project Tiger, with efforts including gharial (a fish-eating crocodilian) reintroduction into the Mahanadi as part of broader river conservation work in the gorge.
