Central Odisha
A dramatic gorge where the Mahanadi river cuts through the Eastern Ghats, home to gharials, mugger crocodiles and forested hills.
Satkosia takes its name from the 'sat kosa' (seven-kosa, roughly 22 km) stretch of gorge the Mahanadi carves through forested hills, forming both a wildlife sanctuary and a striking river landscape. It combines river-boating with forest drives in a way few other Odisha reserves do.
It sees far fewer visitors than Similipal, making it a good choice for those wanting a quieter wildlife and river experience without the same permit pressure.
About 130 km from Bhubaneswar, roughly 3 hours via Angul or Nayagarh.

Similipal National Park's tiger reserve, Bhitarkanika's saltwater crocodile habitat and Satkosia's gorge sanctuary are Odisha's three principal wildlife destinations, each with government-controlled opening and permit rules.
