Hirakud Dam

Sambalpur

Hirakud Dam, completed in 1957 across the Mahanadi river near Sambalpur, is one of the longest earthen dams in the world, with its main dam and connecting dykes stretching over 25 km. It remains a major flood-control and irrigation project and a notable engineering-era landmark of independent India's early infrastructure ambitions.

The reservoir it creates, Hirakud Lake, is a large inland water body offering boating and island viewpoints, making the dam as much a scenic destination today as a functioning piece of infrastructure.
