Western Odisha
Hirakud Dam
One of the world's longest earthen dams, holding back a reservoir large enough to be seen as an inland sea in western Odisha.
Hirakud dam spans the Mahanadi river, and its reservoir — one of Asia's largest by surface area at full capacity — creates a genuinely sea-like horizon in an otherwise landlocked stretch of Odisha. The dam itself dates to the 1950s as one of independent India's major early irrigation and flood-control projects.
Visitors typically combine it with Sambalpur town rather than staying overnight at the dam site, using it as a scenic half-day addition.
