Similipal National Park

Mayurbhanj district

Similipal is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Project Tiger reserve covering roughly 2,750 sq km of sal forest, grassland and hill terrain in Mayurbhanj district, one of the largest protected forest areas in eastern India. It is significant both for tigers and for its exceptional biodiversity, including a rare melanistic tiger population historically documented here.

Beyond wildlife, the reserve contains waterfalls, tribal villages of the Kolha, Santhal and Khadia communities, and a scale of forest that makes it feel genuinely wild compared to more compact wildlife parks elsewhere in India.

History and context

Similipal was declared a tiger reserve in 1973 under Project Tiger and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, home to elephants, tigers, leopards and over 300 bird species, alongside historically documented melanistic tiger sightings, a genetic variant otherwise mainly associated with Odisha's Nandankanan captive population.

The park closes annually during the monsoon season (typically July to October) both for wildlife breeding protection and because forest roads become impassable.

Why visit

  • One of India's largest tiger reserves by area, with a genuinely wild, low-density tourism feel
  • Barehipani and Joranda waterfalls, among the highest in Odisha
  • Tribal villages and cultural context alongside wildlife viewing

Things to see

  • Barehipani Falls, one of India's highest waterfalls
  • Joranda Falls
  • Chahala and Barheipani wildlife viewing zones
  • Tribal hamlets on the reserve's periphery

How to reach

  • About 250 km from Bhubaneswar, roughly 6 hours by road via Baripada, the nearest sizeable town
  • Baripada, the district headquarters, is about 20 km from the main park entrance at Pithabata

Travel tips

  • A forest department permit and registered guide/vehicle are mandatory — arrange these in advance, ideally through a registered operator
  • Confirm seasonal closure dates before planning travel, as the park is shut for several months each year
  • Book accommodation near Baripada or at forest rest houses inside the reserve well ahead, as options are limited
  • Respect tribal communities on the periphery — ask permission before photographing people or homes
