Pipili is a small market town on the Bhubaneswar–Puri highway known for chandua applique work — brightly coloured, hand-stitched fabric appliqué originally made for temple canopies and ceremonial umbrellas, now produced widely as lampshades, bags, umbrellas and wall hangings.
Because it sits directly on the main road between the two cities, Pipili functions as a natural, unplanned stop rather than a dedicated destination, and most visitors spend under an hour browsing its roadside shops.
The craft originated to supply ritual canopies and chariot decorations for the Jagannath Temple's Rath Yatra, and the applique tradition remains closely tied to temple ceremonial needs even as commercial production has expanded.
