Raghurajpur Crafts Village

Near Puri

Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village near Puri where nearly every household practises Pattachitra painting, palm-leaf engraving, or related traditional crafts such as stone and wood carving and Gotipua dance training. It is one of the few places in India where an entire village economy still runs on a single traditional art form.

Walking its single main street, visitors can watch artists working directly outside painted, decorated house-fronts — a genuine working village rather than a staged craft market.

History and context

Pattachitra is a centuries-old cloth-based scroll painting tradition depicting Jagannath and Krishna mythology using natural pigments; Raghurajpur has been recognised by the Indian government as a heritage crafts village for its concentration of practising artists.

The village is also historically associated with training young Gotipua dancers, the traditional male dance form that predates the more widely known Odissi.

Why visit

  • Direct interaction with practising Pattachitra artists in their home workshops
  • Painted house facades that make the village itself a visual attraction
  • Opportunity to buy authentic work directly from artists rather than intermediaries

Things to see

  • Artist workshops along the main street
  • Palm-leaf (tala pattachitra) engraving demonstrations
  • Gotipua dance training grounds, if a practice session coincides with your visit

How to reach

  • About 14 km from Puri, roughly 30 minutes by road
  • About 60 km from Bhubaneswar, often combined with a Puri or Konark day trip

Travel tips

  • Ask permission before photographing artists at work or inside their homes
  • Buying directly from the artist supports the household — prices are negotiable but should be fair
  • Visit on a weekday if possible for a calmer, less crowded experience
